What is public engagement?

Public engagement is one of those terms which means different things to different people depending on what institution or discipline they are in. We have a very broad understanding of public engagement and see it as a spectrum of activities which are undertaken to share the knowledge generated in academic and research institutions with the public.

Spectrum of Public Engagement

In general, public engagement is any interaction with a non specialists audience but does not include activities solely for commercialisation, PR, recruitment, schools outreach or widening participation.

The National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement is currently running a consultation on the definition of Public Engagement for academic and research institutions. >> Find out more
