This is a very basic guide to cropping an image so it is suitably sized for engagingscotland.net. It is important to do this as images become heavily pixelated (fuzzy) if they have to be resized to fit in a web page.

The optimum size for an image appearing on engagingscotland.net is 467px x 228px.

Open your image in Microsoft Office Picture Manager (Right click and select from 'open with'). The picture has to be approximately 2 x wider than it is high. Click on 'Edit Pictures' and choose 'Crop'. Look at the 'Original size' on the right hand side. In this case, I can see the picture is 800px wide, so I will drag the top and bottom crop handles until it is 400px high. You can take a crop section from anywhere in the photo, so long as it is twice as high as it is wide.

Click OK and the image will be resized. Now click on 'Edit Pictures' again, and this time choose 'Resize' from the right hand menu. You have a range of options. I usually choose the 'Custom width x height' option and enter '467' pixels and '228' pixels respectively.
Note: The ratio is not exactly 2:1 so the image will resize to adjust these values slightly (see bottom right hand corner "New Size"). This is only a matter of a few pixels and will not affect the quality of how it is viewed on the web.

Click 'OK' and the image will shrink to the optimum size. Close the program (red cross in the top right hand corner) and the option will appear to save all changes. Click yes (ensure you already have a copy of the original digital image, as these changes will be permanent).
