01 February 2011

Our NEW monthly themes are an initiative to ensure that www.edinburghbeltane.net is THE comprehensive online resource for public engagement.

We hope you will join in and share your experience, learn from other expertise within the partnership and together we can leave a useful legacy of collective wisdom!

FEBRUARY: Podcast and Video

Video and podcasts have the potential to reach huge audiences, and are great for targeting some demographics who may not engage with traditional outreach activities (e.g. talks).

Information which will be useful for other Beltane partners:

  • AUDIENCE
    Which audiences consume media such as video and podcasts?
  • CONTENT
    What sort of information is usefully shared through video and/or podcasts?
    What makes good content for a video/podcast?
  • EQUIPMENT, SOFTWARE AND TECHNIQUES
    How do you present yourself effectively via video or audio?
    What equipment do you need to record a video/podcast;
    What software do you need to record and edit a video/podcast;
    Advantages and disadvantages of software to record or edit a video/podcast;
    How to edit video/podcast material into a final product;
    Uploading video/podcast to an online media platform.
  • PUBLISHING AND SHARING
    Which media platform do you use and why? (e.g. Vidiowiki, YouTube, Planet Scicast, Blip, Audioboo, Vimio)
  • MEASURING SUCCESS
    Evaluation methods for reviewing a video or podcast initiative.
  • CASE STUDIES – WHY PODCASTS/VIDEO WORKED FOR YOUR PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT PROJECT
    Do you have a case study of a video or podcast project? (What was your key message? Which audience were you trying to reach?)
    Was the project successful?
    Did you reach new or larger audiences?
    Do you have ‘top tips’ for video/podcast projects?

It would be great to include your contributions. We can promote projects or articles in the next eBulletin and via our Twitter feed.

  • If you have a full case study, please send us an outline of your project including answers to some of the questions above. We would love to hear your reflections on the impact of the initiative.
  • If you have some useful tips, resources (e.g. links) or experience, please send us the information in an accessible format (e.g. ‘Top ten tips’, a concise paragraph or two, or a link to a short video tutorial).
