Vacancy: STEMNET Communications Officer
STEMNET is currently seeking a Communications Officer:
Communications Officer
£20,000 per annum, 25 days annual leave, pension

STEMNET creates opportunities to inspire young people in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). It is an exciting and dynamic organisation dedicated to supporting the UK’s requirement for STEM qualified people at all levels, working to ensure that the next generation are enthused by and understand the role of STEM subjects and careers in the world around them.
STEMNET helps young people and their teachers access a range of free initiatives to enrich and enhance the STEM curriculum, including the STEM Ambassadors Programme and the STEM Clubs Network.
Over 25,000 STEM Ambassadors volunteer as inspirational role models for young people, and the STEM Clubs Network provides further opportunities for inspiration and learning.
STEMNET is now seeking a Communications Officer to help raise the profile of the organisation by:
- Managing STEMNET’s online presence, including social media, website and e-alerts
- Coordinating events, including the annual award ceremony at the House of Lords
- Supporting STEMNET’s media relations
- Producing brochures and case studies
- Ensuring our local contacts are sent and have access to updated collateral to support their own communications regarding STEMNET’s programmes
- Providing communications support as required for specific projects
This busy and varied role, reporting to the Head of Communications, is a great opportunity to join a hard-working team which is committed to providing the best possible experiences for all young people and help them understand the possibilities of STEM. It is a full-time position, based in STEMNET’s London office and requiring occasional UK-wide travel.
The successful candidate will be:
- An excellent communicator
- Interested in STEM subjects
- A graduate of a communications-related degree, or have completed an apprenticeship in a similar area
STEMNET Role Description
Communications Officer
Purpose of Post: To develop and maintain strong external and internal communications, thereby increasing awareness of STEMNET with diverse audiences and stakeholders, while ensuring consistent corporate messages.
Location: Office based
Reporting to: STEMNET Head of Communications and Public Affairs
Key Function
- Contribute to successfully implementing STEMNET’s communication strategy
- Increase stakeholder awareness and understanding of STEMNET’s work through maintaining media relations, developing collateral and planning events and online presence
- Ensure that all corporate messages are consistently used throughout STEMNET
- Be the first point of contact for all communications enquiries from a variety of sources including partner organisations and media
Responsibilities
Communications operations:
- Ensuring STEMNET staff and Contract Holders are sent and have access to updated collateral to support their own communications regarding STEMNET’s programmes.
- Manage communications requests from STEMNET staff and Contract Holders.
- Circulate content to partner organisations (including Contract Holders) for inclusion in e-alerts, websites, mailouts etc on a regular/frequent basis coordinating with STEMNET colleagues, ensuring we make use of all available channels in the most effective way.
- Update marketing collateral, including brochures, information packs and exhibition material, working with suppliers and colleagues as appropriate, determining the most effective media, including paperless for audiences.
- Draft media releases and stories for STEMNET’s website.
- Manage STEMNET’s online presence, including social media, e-alerts and adding stories and events to the website.
- Coordinate events, including the annual award ceremony at the House of Lords.
- Manage STEMNET’s exhibition presence (e.g. TES, D&T Show, ASE and Big Bang Fair), working with partner organisations and STEMNET colleagues as required.
- Develop case studies to demonstrate the benefit of STEMNET programmes to teachers and employers and ensure that STEMNET’s library of case studies is relevant and kept up-to-date as appropriate.
- Liaise with STEMNET’s contract holders and partner organisations to ensure consistent branding for all STEMNET’s programmes and monitor the use of branding
- Update STEMNET’s website as required
Administrative:
- Monitor and control activities for which have responsibility to ensure that they remain within budget and timescale
- Ensure compliance with the quality management system and the ISO9001 standard, thus ensuring continued accreditation
General:
- Represent STEMNET at events as appropriate
- Provide support for specific projects as appropriate
- Undertake any other duties reasonably required by the Head of Communications and Public Affairs
- Carry out your responsibilities with due regard to STEMNET’s Equal Opportunities Policy
