The Digital Research & Development Fund for Arts and Culture in Scotland is a partnership between Creative Scotland, the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and NESTA and aims to support arts and cultural organisations across Scotland to work with digital technologies to:
- expand their audience reach and engagement and/or
- explore new business models
The Fund will test key propositions facing arts and cultural organisations in Scotland relating to their use of digital technology which expand audience reach and engagement and/or which may open new ways of generating financial revenues.
We invite Expressions of Interest from consortia of up to three Research Organisations (ROs) and/or Independent Research Organisations (IROs) to work with arts and cultural organisations and technology providers on projects under the Digital Research & Development Fund for Arts and Culture in Scotland. The ROs/IROs may be based anywhere in the UK although consortia must include at least one Scottish institution.
Creative Scotland, NESTA and AHRC will undertake a separate selection process for projects from arts and cultural organisations and technology providers to be supported by the Fund.
Researchers from the selected Research consortia will assist Fund recipient organisations to refine the research and development aspects of their projects into propositions and work with those organisations to conduct the research and write up the findings from their projects. This should include a study which pools the findings from the different projects and identifies common themes.
The Digital Research & Development Fund in Scotland will work by encouraging arts and cultural organisations to connect with digital technology companies in order to undertake investigations from which the whole arts and culture sector in Scotland might learn. It will involve the use of rigorous action research methods to capture the lessons from the experiments. The selected Research consortia will initially assist project partners with refining their Research & Development projects as propositions that can be tested. They will then work with project partners to extract lessons and transferable insights from projects to provide a rich body of evidence, data and information through production of a variety of research outputs that aim to inspire and support the innovation capacity of the wider arts and culture sector.
