Prizes for Public Engagement and Science Communication

There are several awards and prizes for excellence in public engagement and science communication (let us know if there are any we've missed).

Royal Society’s Kohn Award for Excellence in Engaging the Public with Science

The Royal Society Kohn Award for Excellence in Engaging the Public with Science is for UK-based early-career scientists who have undertaken high-quality public engagement activities which has had (or will have) a strategic impact on institutions, organisations and cultures, and whose career and future public engagement activities will benefit from the award. The award consists of a silver gilt medal, a gift of £2500 and a grant of £7500 for science communication activities, and is awarded by the Royal Society with the generous support of the Kohn Foundation.

The Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize

The Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize is the United Kingdom's premier award for science communication and is awarded annually for excellence in communicating science to UK audiences. The award was established by Council in 1986 and is given annually to the scientist or engineer whose expertise in communicating scientific ideas in lay terms is exemplary. The Prize consists of a silver gilt medal and a gift of £2500, which are presented by the President of the Royal Society on the occasion of the annual Michael Faraday Prize lecture (the recipient of the Prize is required to give an agreed lecture as part of the Society's annual programme of public events).


The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science

Established in 2010, this award recognizes early-career scientists and engineers who demonstrate excellence in their contribution to public engagement with science activities. A monetary prize of $5,000, a commemorative plaque, complimentary registration to the AAAS Annual Meeting, and reimbursement for reasonable hotel and travel expenses to attend the AAAS Annual Meeting to receive the prize are given to the recipient

The Royal Society if Edinburgh Beltane Innovators Award

In creating these awards the RSE seeks to recognize and promote excellence in the emerging field of Public Engagement. Through encouraging those who engage the public with research, the RSE is supporting the advancement of public discussion on significant matters. Rewarding those who are exemplary at communicating and facilitating this engagement, is an important step in cultural change amongst research organizations, which is necessary to ensure that the public receives the greatest benefit from Scotland’s pioneering research and innovation.

Two Prizes will be made in this the pilot year of the Award. Firstly The RSE Beltane Senior Prize for Public Engagement, awarded to a distinguished individual, who has a long standing experience of this field. Secondly The RSE Beltane Innovators Award, for an emerging talent, who although does not have a long history of engagement shows promise as an innovator in the field.

The Rooke Medal for the Public Promotion of Engineering

The Rooke Medal is awarded to an individual, small team or organisation who has contributed to the Royal Academy of Engineering's aims and work through their initiative in promoting engineering to the public.

The University of Edinburgh Tam Dalyell Prize For Excellence in Engaging the Public with Sciences

The annual Tam Dalyell Prize for Excellence in Engaging the Public with Science - is open to all University of Edinburgh staff. The award recognises an individual or group for work such as hosting school visits, talks and other public events or through publishing and broadcasting. The winner receives a medal and a grant of £500 for their science communication activity.
